Give Me a Break!
(ARA) - When Abbi Rice got a call from her mom saying the platter from her great grandmother's china set had been broken, she could hear in her mother's voice how upset she was.
"My mom is the third generation of her family to use that china," Rice explains. "She grew up on a farm, and she talks about how she remembers her mother always serving the fresh-picked corn on the cob on that platter. It always comes out for special occasions in our family."
Rice's mother had washed her china by hand and left it out to dry on the counter top. The load shifted, and the platter, fell and broke into such small pieces that nothing could be saved.
"My mom is always one to say 'that's OK, I can't take it with me,'" says Rice. "But there was so much history and so many memories behind this platter that I knew I had to find her a replacement." Easier said than done when the china pattern has been out of production for decades.
She had no luck until she stumbled upon the Web site of Replacements Ltd., a company that specializes in locating hard to find tableware. "I typed in the name of pattern, and there it was!" she says. Rice ordered the platter on the spot and it was delivered in a few days - in time for Christmas. "It was meant to be," she says.
"We have over 10 million pieces in stock," says company spokesperson Liam Sullivan. "It is like Christmas every day around here because we are locating pieces of history for families they thought were lost forever."
On Christmas day, Rice was a little nervous about how her mom would react to getting a new platter. She needn't have worried. "When she saw the platter, she burst into tears of joy," says Rice. "She kept asking, 'how did you do this?''
The company replaces 6,500 pieces a day and customers who are searching for a specific pattern can simply call (800) REPLACE (737-5223) or visit the company's Web site www.replacements.com, where they'll find over 200,000 digital images that make it easy for people to identify their china. "If they know the manufacturer and the name of the pattern, that makes it really easy," says Sullivan.
However, the experts at Replacements can also research china using a photo or a photocopy of the front and back of a dinner plate. "We have the world's largest inventory of china, crystal, and silver so if uncle Fred dropped a fork down the garbage disposal or you dropped a piece of your wedding crystal no need to worry we can help you out. We replace the irreplaceable," says Sullivan.
